221st Signal Company (Pictorial) U.S. Army Vietnam Southeast Asia Pictorial Center 1967 - 1972 221st Crest

Video contributed by Paul Berkowitz, 1st Lt. Jul 69-Mar 70

In 2008, my wife and I went on a World Cruise.   We were gone four months.  I shot about fifty hours of home video on the trip, eventually cut it into 44 episodes. During the trip we went on a three day overland to Da Nang, Cambodia (Angkor Wat), and Saigon.  It was sad coming back to Nam.  It felt empty. Weird.  But I’m glad I went.  The video below (9 min) is a shortened version of two of the World Cruise episodes. I inter-cut some 8mm footage shot during my tour in Vietnam. The full episodes run about 20 minutes total. WC25 Da Nang-Cambodia   WC26 Saigon

221st signal footage shot by 1st Lt Roger Hawkins Feb 1969 shows the face of war.  Hardened troops search an enemy body. When the body moves, the search goes on with no assistance offered to a dying man ( a VC tax collector) but Roger says “There was no assistance to offer. It was an ambush and one of the Montagnard strikers emptied a burst through the guys head at point blank range. If you look at how the guys head and face are folded, most of his brain is gone, just the lower functions of the brain stem are left.”
